The long and short of it: For starters, my name is Jason Mortimer and have been working with Photoshop for the past eight years. Discovering other artists such as Bert Monroy and Anders Qvicker gave me the ambition and drive to experiment with Photoshop. After four years of learning Photoshop, through online tutorials and books, I decided to create a website of the work that I created. It was then that I began to make tutorials and learned even more. With so many sites out there offering tutorials, I suppose you could say that I was driven even more to give the visitor something original. After writing over 200 Photoshop tutorials, my Photoshop skills alone started bringing in 30,000 hits a month. I am very confident with Adobe Photoshop but still understand that there is still more to learn, so I feel I am still on the right track.
The plastic factory: I began my journey in a polystyrene plant. After long hot hours of work at the plastic factory, I would come home and work another six hours at the very least in Photoshop. My days off, it wasn't uncommon for me to spend the entire day learning new and exciting things with Photoshop. It was exciting to excell with each new experience. My first client was a company that needed some editing done on their website. Not really Photoshop related but I ended up creating them a whole new layout. They never saw the new design...I did it for myself I guess. After nine years of working at the plastic factory while moonlighting with Photoshop, I decided it was time to go to school and get a degree. I left my job and started school full time.
Summary: After many tutorials, clients, a national award and magazine publication of my work, I decided to finally get a job in my field. I have come to realize that freelancing is difficult and not as steady as I once thought it to be. A 40 hour a week job (plus) will certainly fit my schedule and though I currently live in Wisconsin, I will gladly relocate if I get an acceptable offer.
Other programs: Although my patience has for the most part been with Photoshop, I have also learned other programs that was essential to learn on the way. The below illustrates an approximate, self evaluation of the programs that I have used most a long the way.
